BEYOND BURNOUT.

 NAVIGATING THE THIN LINE BETWEEN PASSION AND OVERLOAD.

We all have different experiences of burnout and trust me, they weren’t pleasant. According to google, burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. I am sure everyone has their own definition of burnout and it all stems from overworking, either physical, mental or even both. It often reduces productivity and leaves you overwhelmed and drained.

How do you know you are experiencing burnout or are on the road to burnout? Here are some signs of burnout;

  • ·       Constant mental and physical fatigue
  • ·       Reduced competence and lethargy in your endeavors
  • ·       Increased physical health complaints such as headaches, gastrointestinal problems and muscle aches
  • ·       Insomnia and change in appetite
  • ·       Lack of purpose and motivation from the role.

To offer a resolution to this matter, the first step is taking a break from whatever role that you are into, whether its from your occupation or even your studies.

Recovering from burnout is not a quick process but there are certain steps that you can take to recover your energy and overall alleviate your stressors for a healthier lifestyle.

The first step is identifying your stressors and mitigating their impacts through generating solutions. Research shows that there are two types of recovery; external and internal. External recovery is a way through which the body can recover from physical health complaints like headache and muscle aches. Sleep and enhanced nutrition are essential for external recovery but seeking professional help is advised.

Internal recovery can be combated mostly through cognitive behavioral therapy, (CBT) which is basically talking therapy. This gives you a chance to freely talk about your stressors and even draw out solutions with another party who doesn’t necessarily have to be a therapist but can be a confidant.

Another effective way is through journaling and self-care. Self-care varies among individuals; it can involve sleeping all day, cooking your favorite meal, cleaning, or even painting, depending on what brings joy to you.I strongly discourage the use of alcohol and drugs to deal with burnout as it has tremendously negative effects and can worsen the burnout and cause dependance. I would recommend engaging in a fun sport or exercising as this boosts your metabolism.

Remember: Transform your role from duty to delight!
